Background

  • neonates rarely form RBC antibodies
  • no need for repeated testing for:
    • RBC antibodies
    • compatibility testing for RBC tx

Eligibility

  • <4 months of age
  • inpatient hospitalization
  • initial blood sample for:
    • type and screen
      • ABO/rh
      • RBC antibody screen

Disqualification

  • type specific RBC–not type O
    • directed donor
    • whole blood
  • discharge from inpatient
  • transfer to another hospital

Re-enroll

  • <4 months old
  • inpatient hospitalization
  • new sample for:
  • Type and screen
  • ABO/rh
  • RBC antibody screen
