Frequently Asked Questions:

How long does it take to donate blood?

About 45-60 minutes from walking in the door to walking out. The blood collection of one pint only takes about 7-10 minutes.

How many people do I need to sign up?

You’ll want to secure appointments for 10% over your goal number

How much time should the coordinator expect to spend on hosting a drive?

Expect to spend about 4 hours per week leading up to the drive (at least 4 weeks in advance would be a total of 16 hours).

How do I get people to sign up?

Don’t be shy; ask them. The main reason people don’t donate blood is that they have not been asked. Another option is to form a committee and have each person recruit a certain number of donors. Post on social media and newsletters, share with your network and ask them to donate blood, and get your group’s leadership involved to also endorse blood donation.  Use your voice and your platform to reach your audience and encourage your friends and coworkers to do the same.

Who can donate?

For eligibility and health-related questions, refer to the Frequently Asked Questions page or contact the Clinical Specialists at 1-800-DONATE-1, x2543. Some medications, medical conditions or risk factors may be a basis for deferral. We encourage all donors to eat and drink plenty of fluids before donating.

What are the benefits of hosting as a non-profit organization?

Local hospitals rely on community groups to partner with Bloodworks Northwest to help ensure a steady blood supply for lifesaving treatments.

When your group hosts a blood drive you help to better engage with the community and save lives.  You provide an accessible way for both your members and those you serve to take a small amount of time to make a big impact. You share in the commonality of humanity and earn awards for your mission.
